Spend your first two nights in the Hoang Su Phi area. After the drive from Hanoi, settle into Nam Son and enjoy a local dinner. The next day takes you towards Nam Hong through village paths, tea-growing hills and terraces, with lunch in a local home. Walking makes space for the details you miss through a car window: a garden beside the path, traditional dress and the changing patterns of the mountains.
Continue through Quan Ba Heaven Gate and the Twin Mountains, visit Lung Tam’s hemp-weaving tradition, then travel via Pho Bang and the Vuong family residence towards Lung Cu and Dong Van. Old-town streets make an atmospheric end to the day. Ma Pi Leng brings the dramatic contrast of limestone walls and the Nho Que River below, followed by your overnight stop in Bao Lac.

From Bao Lac, continue to Ba Be for Hua Ma Cave and an evening beside the countryside. This route rewards travellers who enjoy walking, village encounters and scenic road journeys. Long transfer days are part of exploring the remote north. We split them with meal and photo stops and keep the first afternoon for settling in, with time to enjoy village life.
The Nam Son–Nam Hong day is the most demanding walk in the sample programme: about 14 km, typically 6–7 hours with breaks, on uneven paths with climbs and descents. Discuss a shorter route before booking. Hua Ma Cave also involves steps; the bike ride can be replaced by a vehicle transfer.
Pack walking shoes with grip, light layers, a rain jacket, sun protection and a small day bag. Mountain weather can change, and wet paths need a more careful pace. Tell us about dietary preferences and mobility needs so we can select suitable stays and activities.
